In 2016, WIC served close to half a million individuals in Los Angeles County. This includes 326,167 children under age 5, which is approximately 55% of all children under age 5 in Los Angeles County*, and 85,856 pregnant and post-partum women.
Comparing Los Angeles County to the WIC Population
Based on 2010 U.S. Census data along with the American Community Survey (ACS), WIC has served over 50% of all Los Angeles County children under age 5 since 2005.
Ethnicity and Language
Since 2003, WIC participants have been predominately of Hispanic origin (>80%). In 2016, the ethnic breakdown of WIC participants were 81% Hispanic, 8% African-American, 4% Caucasian, 5% Asian, and 2% others.
English and Spanish are the two major languages spoken among the WIC population in Los Angeles County. English has been steadily increasing as the preferred language in the past decade. In 2016, 64% of WIC households chose English as their preferred language, up from 43% in 2003.
WIC parents’ educational background has been on an upward trajectory in the last decade. In 2016, 56% of WIC households had someone who completed 12 or more years of school, compared to 44% in 2004.
